Contemporary bedding ideas are something that most homeowners will find by heading online to interior design websites or flicking through the latest style magazines. Decorating a contemporary bedroom is fairly straightforward and you will find an exceptional selection of products to choose from by heading online for the latest in designer bedding sets and bed sheets.

Design Tips for Modern Bedding

Most design experts suggest that when decorating a contemporary bedroom, the use of geometric shapes, stripes and other patterns is one of the most popular decorative solutions. Can You Update Bedroom Furniture Decor While Keeping It Classic?

Are you comfortable with your bedroom furniture? Do you feel that it can last you another ten years, but see that the colors are fading or that the surroundings are less than satisfactory for the 21st century? How can you update the furniture and bedroom decor in your home so that it brings you into the modern era without doing away with all of your classic objects? Here are a few places you can start to maintain your style and still make it appear more modern.

Start Small.

Don't ditch your furniture or knock out walls. Start with small changes. For example, you can update a room by simply adding a few accents, such as a throw rug to bring more color into a room full of earth tones. Pastels and earth tones are very classic colors, and adding splashes of bright reds, golds, greens, and blues can update the area without getting rid of the furniture style. To bring the room together, add matching throw pillows so that the splash of color carries over to the couch or bed (depending on the room).

Stop Thinking Big.

Classic style doesn't have to mean huge and imposing furniture, and it certainly doesn't have to include expensive antiques. Go to a modern furniture store and choose a design that mimics the old Victorian bed your grandmother had but is much smaller in size. Remember, the original designers of classical furniture were often working with much larger rooms than you'll find in a home now, and trying to stuff furniture this size into a single room will make it feel cramped or even be difficult to maneuver in. Also, faux antiques can look very real without costing a great deal of money.

Look for the Design.

Rather than looking for furniture that matches the original classic style that you like, shift your focus to what it is about that style that pleases you. For instance, do you like your classic couch and loveseat because of the size of the units, or is it the design on the material? Perhaps you like the material itself, or you like the intricate carving on the wood of the arms of the unit. Whatever it is that you particularly enjoy, you can most likely find that element implemented into a more modern design. You can do the same when it comes to window dressings, kitchen hardware, and restroom accessories.

Learn to Compromise.

You may not find exactly what you are looking for when you go shopping for new décor or furniture because you have the idea in your head that you must have a specific color and style. If you find something pleasant that is a shade off, this can still be a good addition. As an alternative, you could always recover the furniture or sand and refinish any wood. If you can't seem to find furniture you can easily locate other elements to update your room without giving up your clearly classic sense of style.

Modern Bedding Ideas

Modern bedding isn't just beautiful- it can also be very practical, extremely durable and quite affordable. Even luxury bedding for the modern bedroom doesn't have to break your bank account.

Our busy lives today mean there is little time to spend in traditional homemaking. Modern bedding has to fit into our modern lifestyles and provide for easy care as well as comfort. After a long day at the office, no one wants to come home and sleep on scratchy bedding. On those precious days off work, no one wants to spend all their time doing laundry and ironing pillow cases so that they have no wrinkles. With today's modern fabrics, whether it's 100% Egyptian cotton, or blends, it's just not necessary to spend lots of time spend caring for your bedding. Of course, doing laundry does take time, but you shouldn't need to spend any extra time making bedding for the modern bed look nice.

One of the most popular ways to make your bedding modern is to choose Dwell. The Dwell line was created by its designer and founder, Christine Lemieux, in 1999 because she felt there simply were too few modern, colorful, beautiful graphics and other designs in quality bedding for the modern home.

She designs bedding using very bright colors such as lime, butter yellow, chocolate, charcoal and ocean blue to create patterns like trellis, awning stripes featuring broad, bold striping, thin stripe which uses various widths of striping to create outstanding bedding patterns and dot or cube. Along with these bold graphic patterns, solid sheets and border sheets allow mix and match to create a very modern look for the bedroom.

An absolutely fabulous choice in luxury bedding for the modern room comes from Amenity. Using 400 thread count 100% cotton to create the duvet and pillow shams, the Twig design in bright blue peacock or cocoa, uses a solid background to highlight the large graphic of a tree.

Drift is another great design which features a graphic of a dandelion head against the tan or cocoa background. The Amenity Leaf design places large leaves on the solid background colors. The pillow shams for each of these selections are solid in the same color as the background of the duvet. Very modern in appearance, these bedding choices make the modern bedroom's focal point the bed. This gives a clean, uncluttered look to the bedroom by focusing attention on the bedding with these bold, modern looks.

Nygard International Home Bedding has a very modern appearance that is so modern it is almost retro!

The Coco bedding from Nygard uses "urban suede" which is a type of faux suede in large square of cocoa and black to create a great bedding set. The faux suede is created of 97% cotton and 3% spandex resulting in fabric that is soft, plush and the best part is that it is machine washable! The large blocks of color break the bed into quarters and the tailored styling make a bold, modern statement. This top quality bedding is extremely affordable- the prices are much lower than you would expect for material that looks just like suede.

Western Bedding has created an outstanding modern set of bedding that has a very Zen element.

Using black and white in tailored designs, Western Bedding has created a very striking bedding set. The comforter, created from 50% cotton and 50% polyester has solid black jacquard on one side and the reverse is a black and white graphic print. The geometric jacquard weave provides a sense of texture and is repeated in the bed skirt. The pillow shams are crisply tailored and feature cording details. The sheets and pillow cases are 220 thread count 100% cotton percale in bright white with a black twist cord detail. Add decorative pillows with engineer-sharp geometric appliqu,s and buttons to complete the ensemble.

When decorating with modern style bedding, especially with bold colors and geometrics, it is very important to keep a modern, uncluttered look in the bedroom. Avoid mixing modern linens with antique furnishings- the effect will simply not look attractive. Keep your other items organized and mostly out of site as well to keep with the theme.

Platform beds and waterbeds lend themselves perfectly to modern choices in bedding. If you select a two-color geometric for your bedding, choose modern accessories in those same colors, but also add a few carefully selected accents in another bold, bright color.

For example, if you select Western Bedding's black and white modern ensemble, consider adding a red throw pillow and a red lamp to your modern black and white bedroom. The effect will be absolutely stunning!

The result of having a modern bedroom will be an inviting but crisp, clean bedroom that has you feeling more organized and on top of the world!

How to Create an Exotic Moroccan Bedroom

Moroccan décor is quite popular in modern homes, due to its dramatic jewel toned colors, gorgeous exotic patterns and luxurious Moroccan fabrics. Making a bedroom into an exotic Moroccan bedroom is a decorating project that can be very exciting. From choosing the Moroccan furniture pieces you like to finding the Moroccan bedding and decorating accessories that fit your taste and set the mood of your room, the shopping experience will surely be a pleasant one with so many Moroccan home accessories to browse through and enjoy.

How to Start Your Decorating Project

Start by selecting your paint color. What color excites you for your Moroccan inspired bedroom? You have lots of color choices with this theme. Moroccan décor spans a wide range of colors - from cobalt blue to saffron yellow; from shocking pink to brilliant red and gorgeous greens. Any of these colors would work nicely in this African décor. Offset with some earthy tones, like sand and cinnamon and your bedroom will definitely take on the decorative appeal of Morocco.

Use Moroccan Home Accessories To Complete The Look

You can add wonderful touches of Moroccan design to your bedroom with mood lighting using Moroccan candle lanterns or lamps. Use authentic lanterns imported from Morocco if your budget allows or you can achieve the same look and feel with beautiful Moroccan-inspired candle lanterns at a substantial savings.

There are many Moroccan lanterns and lamp designs to choose from. You can start adding that exotic touch by purchasing just a few Moroccan candle lighting fixtures. Hang your Moroccan lighting or place them on side tables or drawer tops.

Many Moroccan lanterns and lamps use candles as their light source, but they can also be electrical. The choice is yours. The advantage of using candles as the light source is that the movement of candle light enhances the romantic mood created by Moroccan candle lanterns. The flickering flame causes the shadow effects made from the intricate pattern cut in the metal of the lanterns to dance about on ceilings.

Heighten the mood in your romantic Moroccan themed bedroom by using scented candles in your exotic candle lanterns.

When it comes to Moroccan bedding, most designers suggest that you stick with spice colors. Your bedding can either match or offset the color scheme of your paint.

Add lots of pillows or cushions on the bed and on the floor. Use pillows with colors and patterns of Morocco. Moroccan fabrics or even some embroidered silk will help you achieve your unique exotic look.

Rugs are another great accessory for your Moroccan bedroom. Use decorative area rugs or authentic Moroccan rugs to soften the floor and enhance the authentic look and feel of your bedroom.

Use canopies or mosquito netting above your bed to give your bed exotic style.

Moroccan furniture, including Moroccan tables, chairs, wardrobes, headboards and chests, can be heavy wooden or wrought iron pieces. Ornate markings on the heavy wood are common. Metal pieces lean toward being "chunky". If you want authentic Moroccan furnishings, you should look for Moroccan Imports such as intricately carved screens and carved furniture pieces with mother of pearl or brass details or intricate carvings and brilliant colors.

If you are having a hard time finding decorating ideas for your new exotic Moroccan bedroom, there are many Moroccan decor decorating books to choose from. You can purchase these books to find Moroccan decor ideas you would like to use.

If you are just getting married or buying a home and you like the Moroccan style, you can always put the Moroccan Imports you like on your wish list.

Any look can be achieved for less if you use your imagination. If you're on a budget, buy accessories and furniture that give you the feeling of Morocco for a fraction of the cost.

I believe it's now the time for us to take a look at our home designs.

There are just few easy ways wherein we can smarten up our life in the home and its interior designs by having a focus on some elements that are very significant and important. These are as follows:

• Harmony - Sense of synchronization should guide each room in the home. They should blend in with each other to feel the perfect harmony.

• Focus Point - This is maybe our favorite art work or picture that draws our concentration to a central spot in the room. This is what we want to convey and this sets our mood.

• Balance - This is the successful mixing up together of the furnishings, colors, and other stuffs that we like. We should also take into consideration the proper distribution of furniture to have a room weight balance.

• Color - This must be a noticeable and clear one. Utilizing vibrant colors can change the vigor around, set the mood and create a big variation. A candle or small lampshade may be used to create an impressive outcome.

• Proportion and Scale - Make use only furnishings like metal beds and discount bedroom sets that match the whole dimension of the room. Avoid overcrowding by placing large or much furniture.

• Rhythm - Generate the fantasy of visual motivation through movement by organizing our room so that the owner's eyes keep glancing from different points in the room. This must not be bewildered with the stuffs that scatter around.

Interior design and decoration of the home is definitely a very sensitive topic as a lot of people experience the contrary result of what they expect. Stuffs like candles or figurines may be simply reorganized and put on the corners or shelves to make remarkable spectacular results and can also enhance the illumination in areas often ignored.

Interior Design Ideas - Choose the Appropriate Furniture and Accessories For Your Home

When you buy furniture is good to evaluate the overall color of the situation, the type of furniture and how many people will inhabit the room. Type of floor / laminate, carpet and the total size of the room are also a determining factor.

Select a heavy thick curtains for the windows of the bedroom and living room, and lighter of the doors. So your home will be comfortable and aesthetic. Thick curtains create an atmosphere of relaxation and tranquility.

Since it is a choice of furniture, large leather sofa or couch are particularly suitable for modern homes. If you are a fan of comfort and warmth of wood, you can choose vibratory chairs. If you often need to move from one location to another chose the cane, which combine the convenience and low cost. Of course a similar effect can be achieved with PVC chairs and tables.

The amount and type of decor must meet the area of your home. Bright walls and wallpaper suitable for smaller rooms, creating a sense of space. Room accessories - paintings, photographs - must also meet the size of the room. If you have a large home, may set a dark interior and large pictures.

Additional effects can be achieved when combined with sofa shade with light sources. If you choose them at different times choose lamp with a neutral light, to match every color and type of powder.

Another important part of the decoration of the house is carpet. It does not only enhance the effect of interior design, but brings additional style and comfort at home. In addition you can choose decorative glass windows, or even hanging ceiling if you have enough space.

Japanese Style Bedrooms - Popular and Relaxing

Japanese design and culture has now entered bedroom decor. This is for good reason: Many people find its simple lines soothing. Since your bedroom is your innermost retreat, your sanctuary, it should offer you comfort as you enter the room. By utilizing sparing, but luxurious, Japanese decor and design, you can create a relaxing, meditative, bedroom. How do you go about creating a Japanese styled bedroom? Let's find out.

Start from the bottom up, and consider your flooring. Would you like traditional tatami (tightly woven straw) mat flooring? It is very comfortable to bare feet. Traditional Japanese design requires a certain mat layout that dictates certain room dimensions. Modern Japanese-inspired decor may use a traditional tatami mat layout as a floor insert surrounded by other flooring or one tatami mat on top of hard flooring to use as a yoga mat.

Next is the central feature of a Japanese-style bedroom - a futon or platform bed. In Japanese design, this bed does not have a footboard or, sometimes, a headboard. It has an extended platform on which the mattress sits in the middle. It usually does not have box springs. It sits low to the ground and sometimes well away from all walls. Use all silk bedding in a single rich color to continue the Japanese theme (and to pamper yourself). Add several silk pillows to your platform bed to complete the effect.

Add shoji-style lamps for lighting. Their translucent panels are especially good for creating warm, diffused lighting. Put one on a dimmer switch on either side of the bed and have bright enough light for reading or soft, romantic lighting from the same lamps. Shoji doors could replace French doors leading into your bathroom or out onto your deck. Skylights also look classy framed to appear shoji-style.

Remember to keep bedside tables and other tables in the bedroom area low. Keep them in proportion to the height of your bed. If your bedroom also has a sitting area, consider keeping the Japanese theme and use a low table and zabuton (the seating cushions).

You should also consider adding a tokonoma, which is a small, raised alcove in which you might display a wall scroll, and other decorative features. A sliding-door wall closet can be opened up and trimmed to make a deep tokonoma. A shallow alcove can be framed out and set in the wall. If you are displaying a tall, narrow object, you can even put a tokonoma between studs. Traditionally, the decorations are changed every month or so. Small geisha dolls, a bonsai tree, or a Buddha statue are other ideas for your tokonoma decorations.

So there you go.

When you are ready for a soothing bedroom makeover, consider Japanese design ideas. Whether you go completely traditional with a tamaki room, and all the proper accents or whether you choose a lighter impact, only incorporating a few Japanese-inspired items in with your traditional bed and flooring, a bedroom with Japanese style elements is a mentally soothing retreat that you will look forward to visiting at the end of a stressful day.

Creating The Perfect Bedroom Interior Design

A bedroom is a place where we go to unwind and relax away from all the demands that modern life puts upon us. Therefore when looking at a bedroom interior design should take time to careful plan just what you want in order to achieve a tranquil and peaceful haven away from modern living. Remember a bedroom is the most personal room to you in your home as it is a room where you can relax and dream.

A bedroom really is a place where you can rest and relax and to share a few quiet moments with yourself or your loved one as well as being a place where you can sleep away the weariness of a long hard day.

However the bedroom although the most private and personalized space in a home must also reflect the user's lifestyle as well as their practical needs along with their own particular preferences and dreams.

When you decide upon using a bedroom interior designer you must get to know them and tell them your innermost thoughts and ideas as well as other information relating to your cultural background, how you were brought up and your temperament. They will also need to know more tangible facts such as what storage space you need, the colours that you would prefer in your scheme and what if any particular theme you would like for your bedroom design.

However the first thing you should do if your home begins to feel cramped is analyze the way you are using the space that you have available. Often people find that there is furniture in their homes which is no longer required or just clearing out piles of old magazines, empty bottles and worn out clothes can provide you with space you did not realize you had.

Also when looking at bedroom interior design it is important that you do not break up the room into little bits rather design the room as a whole. For example a room will look bigger with wall to wall carpeting compared to a room which has lots of rugs scattered all over it.

Also the lighting in a bedroom design will need to be considered, certainly most rooms benefit from having both functional and decorative lighting in them. Functional lighting is used to set the scene in a room whilst decorative will add interest. So it is important that you include both primary and secondary lighting in to your bedroom interior design.

Finally let's look at the windows in your bedroom interior design. These are usually a very prominent focal point in any room and choosing the right kind of decorative window treatments can lend style to a room as well as letting that all important natural light into the room.

Home Decorating Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose a good-quality sofa?

I want a sofa that I'll be able to keep for years. What should I look for?

Hardwood frames that are glued and screwed in place are the most hardwearing. Quality sofas have individual coil springs; mid-price versions use zigzag springs; and budget ones have webbing. Washable, loose covers are good for families, and close-woven covers are durable. But to check if it's well-made, simply sit on it!

How do I make old floorboards look good?

Sand them with a specialist machine, starting with medium-grade abrasive paper, then going over it again with a fine-grade one. Give the floor three coats of varnish, sanding lightly by hand between coats.

Which blinds are best in lofts?

I've just had my loft converted and need to get some blinds for the windows. Is there an alternative to plain roller blinds?

You'll need blinds in your loft as the light will be very strong and will wake you up early in the morning in the summer. If you're after something a bit different, pleated blinds have a soft, pretty effect and diffuse light, while traditional roller blinds will help prevent light reflecting on computer and TV screens. Blackout versions are worth considering - they fit into channels at the sides of the window to stop light getting in around the edges - they're perfect for light sleepers. Venetian blinds are another option, allowing you to tilt the blinds as well as open and close them for maximum flexibility.

How do I try out paint colours without ruining my walls?

I can never decide which paint looks best in my room before I buy, and I don't really want to put patches of colour all over my walls for weeks. Is there a simpler way that will help me choose the right colour for my room?

Instead of painting tester pots directly onto the walls, use them to paint a large sheet cut from lining paper. The lining paper can then be easily moved around so you can try it on different walls, without spoiling the look of your room.

Can I use bold wallpaper in a small room?

My bedroom is tiny but I want to use a bold-patterned wallpaper. Nice or nasty?

Nice! A big pattern will have an impact in a small room, but use it on just one wall. Choose the colour of the wallpaper carefully - brights will make a small room feel smaller, and soft colour contrasts in the paper create a sense of space. Balance the overall effect by picking plain colours, subtle textures or small motifs for other furnishings.

How do I create a relaxing lighting scheme?

I'm fed up with only having an overhead light, as it doesn't make the room look very welcoming. How can I make it more relaxing?

Recessed ceiling-mounted spotlights or a pendant light will give you good overall light, but if that's your only source, the lighting can feel harsh. Soften the overall effect by adding a table lamp next to your sofa and a floor lamp or reading light near your armchair. You should be aiming for around two to three separate light sources for an average-sized room to create pools of light where you need them.

What's the best layout for a formal living room?

The kids have left home so I want to create a more formal living room. What's the best way to lay out it out?

If you want a formal room, whatever your style, the one rule is symmetry! Arrange furniture symmetrically and you'll give your room the grown-up look you're after. If you have plenty of space, move your sofa so it's facing two identical armchairs or an identical sofa. You can also use tricks like adding a pair of side tables with matching lamps, or arranging a set of four prints in matching frames on the wall. If you don't have the space for all of these different elements, choose smaller pieces such as carver chairs instead of upholstered versions. Then just arrange them around a focal point - whether it's a fireplace, window or a coffee table.

What good-value curtains work with sash windows?

I've got high ceilings and beautiful sash windows - but a tight budget. How should I dress them?

An elegant Roman blind will give a clean and simple finish to your room. Or, if you prefer curtains, don't think that having high ceilings means you can't get away with ready-mades. Sash windows look great with floor-length curtains, so choose the longest pair you can find. If they come up short, add a contrasting 'hem' to the bottom of the curtains for an elegant look. You don't even need to be a dab hand with a sewing machine as you can simply iron on some Vilene Extra Strong Wundaweb (£1.99 for 3m, http://www.amazon.co.uk) for a quick fix.

How do I revamp my interior doors?

I want to revamp my interior doors. I've sanded them down and chosen the paint, but I've heard there's a special way to do the job - can you explain?

Preparation is key. Wipe the door with a damp cloth to get rid of dust, then leave to dry. To paint, wedge the door open, remove the handle and fittings and slide a dustsheet underneath. If it's a panelled door, paint the mouldings around each of the recessed panels using an eggshell or gloss paint, then paint the panels, working from the top downwards. Paint the horizontal cross rails starting at the top and working down, then paint the vertical centre rail and two side rails. Finally, paint the door's side edges. A second coat is usually needed after the first has dried. When completely dry, pain the doorframe and surrounding architrave. If it's a plain door, imagine a vertical line down the centre, and horizontal lines running across, dividing it into eight or 10 squares. Paint the top left, then top right, working down. To paint a glazed door, stick masking tape around the edge of the panes to protect them. Then start by painting the mouldings as you would a regular panelled door.

What's the easiest way to use pattern?

I'm really keen on using plain colours in my home, but I'd also love to introduce a block of pattern to update my style. What's the easiest way for a pattern novice to get started?

Start small, limiting yourself to a few accessories such as a cushion or a lamp shade with a bold design. The easiest design to work with is one that has a white or cream background and a simple motif. Pick any patterns you want to use in just one colour, so you can add to the scheme as your confidence grows and you'll know that everything will always work together.

How can I divide up a long, narrow room?

I have a long, narrow living room - what's the best way to divide up the space, without doing any building work?

A long narrow room can feel quite daunting, so it's best to divide it up into two 'zones'. You might have a living zone and a dining zone, or a relaxation zone with the television, plus a quieter area for working. Use a sofa or open bookcase as a divider and you'll be left with two much more manageable room shapes. Use the structure of the room to decide what function would suit each area. For example, a focal point such as a fireplace is ideal for building a living area around, while the space by the window is great for a dining table or mini home office. Don't worry if there's no obvious focal point - if you use the area for entertaining, make your sofa the centre of attention.

What sort of carpets are suitable for hallways?

I've been told I need a heavy-duty carpet for my hall and landing, but i don't know exactly what I should be looking for. Can you help?

A carpet that's labelled 'Heavy Domestic' or 'Extra Heavy Domestic' should be able to cope with the high traffic of busy areas such as a hall and landing. To be certain the carpet has been rigorously tested, look for the Carpet Foundation Quality Mark. A carpet containing around 80% wool and 20% nylon is more resilient and less prone to flattening than other types, as nylon fibres are extremely hard wearing. Don't stint on underlay, as a good-quality version will prolong the life of the carpet even more.

What curtains work best against radiators?

My radiator is under my window, but I don't like short curtains. What are my options?

Teaming narrow dress curtains with a blind is a good solution. Dress curtains are narrower than standard curtains and aren't designed to draw across the window, so they won't prevent you enjoying the heat from the radiator, but they'll still give you the look you want.

Is there a knack to matching up patterned wallpaper?

I'm having a go at putting up wallpaper for the first time. Is there a knack to matching up patterns?

If the room has a focal point such as a fireplace, start papering here; otherwise, start from a window. When measuring the first wallpaper length, make sure a whole motif will be at the top of the wall, then allow an extra 5cm on the top and bottom, which you'll trim off later. If the wallpaper has a straight pattern repeat, the motifs will line up horizontally across the wall, and you need to cut each length starting at the same point in the design. If the design is offset, the motifs line up diagonally, so each length needs to be moved up or down to allow for this. Once you've hung the first length against a plumb line on the wall, you can slide the second length into position for a perfect match, or pull it away and reposition it.

Does blue paint have to look cold?

I want to paint my bedroom blue, but it's north-facing. Will it look too cold?

Blue needn't be a cold colour if you pick the right shade and balance it with some warmer tones. A sky blue will look cheerful, and can be warmed up with cream paintwork and peachy-toned highlights. Alternatively, pick out a blue paint that's close to violet and has a pinky tone. You can then accessorise with a pink, floral bedspread or curtains for a warmer look. In a north facing room, the blue shades to avoid are those that seem dull or have a grey tinge.

Can you help us locate a stunning feature radiator?

We are having an awful lot of difficulty finding a feature radiator for the living room. To be honest, we haven't been impressed by any of the the 'Art' radiators we've seen so far so thought we'd ask for expert advice instead. The wall dimensions are 4ft x 13ft.

There's been a huge push recently to turn radiators into sculptural pieces that can hang on the wall rather than being utility elements designed to blend into the home. Some are good, some are tragic , but they all cost a small fortune. Several of the most impressive are made by Caleido, who have produced a number of highly textural variations, such as their great Honey, Skin and Air models.

Where can I find curtain poles with the 'Wow' factor?

I've inherited a beautiful swagged curtain in a fantastic gold and black silk fabric. I'm planning on having it in the bedroom, but wanted to source some curtain poles and fittings that will keep the wow factor. We don't have much on offer in my area and the DIY stores' offerings are a little twee. Do you have any suggestions?

Fabricant designs and produces just the sort of fittings you're after, well detailed and individual. What's more it has a superb range of finishes to choose from (gunmetal is a favourite). The traditional finials and tiebacks are all there, but the contemporary selection has some real gems, like the Portcullis and Reeded designs. A popular pole size to use is the 50mm, and I'd budget about £800 for the full ensemble.

We want to match our original brickwork to that of our extension.

We're planning an extension and want to match the brickwork of the main house, but can't find anything that looks close. The building dates back to about 1820. Do you have any contacts?

There are about 2,000 types of bricks on the market, so there's usually something similar. As well as the huge range of new bricks, there's a massive market for reclaimed brick, so check your local architectural yard. Builders merchants are also usually good sources, but your best bet is to call in the specialists like Brick Find.

Is coloured lighting in a bathroom floor possible and, if so, is it safe?

I've seen a picture of a bathroom with coloured lighting in the floor, which I'm interested in recreating at home. Do you know of a supplier, and is this lighting really safe for the bathroom, as I have a very inquisitive two year old?

I imagine you saw fibre optic lights rather than halogen, which, although they run on a safer low voltage, get very hot. Fibre optics are perfectly safe for wet areas like bathrooms and also outdoors, because the actual light source can be housed out of harm's reach, many metres away. All that's required is to route the fibre-optic ropes (which are just like a tube that the light is piped down) to where you need the lighting, and then cap with the finishing lens fitting.

Be warned: colour changing lighting can be more disco than spa if not done professionally, so sticking with static colours is recommended. The positioning and the installation still need to be well considered and competently carried out, so don't rush into fitting this type of lighting just on a whim.

Good-quality fibre optic kits can be bought online for around £400 through Unlimited Light.

Can coloured lighting be installed in a bathroom floor, and is it safe to do so?

How can we display our photos and children's pictures?

We've got lots of our sons' school and nursery pictures and we've been searching for a way to display them. We did see a solution in a magazine, which was almost like a washing line - a suspended wire you could peg pictures to. Do you have any ideas?

Yes, the 'washing line' idea is probably the most simple way to clip up pictures. Just hang a wire or string between wall hooks and attach the pictures with wooden clothes pegs which can be painted any colour you like. Another idea is to designate a 'graffiti wall' space to display art, painting picture areas and frames, which can then be filled up. You could also paper a wall in the now classic wallpaper 'Frames' by Chris Taylor and Craig Wood for Graham & Brown (0800 328 8452).

Is there a company that stocks Japanese soak-in baths in the UK?

We are about to start designing our first flat. The bathroom is very small and we would love to have a Japanese soak-in bath to enable us to have a shower as well. We have looked through lots of UK websites, but nobody seems to have what we're after. Any ideas?

What you're looking for is sometimes referred to as a Roman bath and many people in the UK are interested in sourcing these. Unfortunately, although they are common elsewhere in the world, we've not yet found anyone who imports them to the UK. Your best option may be to have one specially made up. Eros2 can produce bespoke granite and marble/resin shower trays in a range of colours, so you'll be able to have something unique tailored to fit your requirements exactly.

Can we use stainless steel as a splashback on a curved wall?

We are planning to refit our kitchen soon and would like to use stainless steel as a splashback. The problem is that the walls are very curvy and the oven sits in an alcove that's quite rounded. Where can we get sheet metal made to fit this complicated wall?

It sounds as if you're setting yourself a rather difficult task with a surface that's as complex as this. Sheet stainless steel is easily fabricated for flat surfaces and simple rolled curves, but anything more demanding than this and you could end up with messy welds, folds and seams that would ruin the whole look. Your best solution when working with curved surfaces is to go for mosaic tiles, and there's a stunning range of metallic tiles called Metallismo produced by SICIS. The tiles are rust- and scratch-resistant, are available in both gold and silver, and there's even a unique mixed range in various mosaic shapes. So, rather than have a fairly uninspiring run of plain stainless steel splashback, you could create something really breathtaking.

Can you suggest a light fitting to complement our dark, richly decorated living room?

We'd love some advice on a suitable hanging shade for our living room. The area is panelled and has dark-wood flooring, plus we have deep reds, greys and brass fittings within the colour scheme. We want the space to keep its dark, smoking-room look, and need a light fitting that would complement this.

If you want to preserve the 'gentleman's club' feel of the room, then I'd suggest not choosing a bright shade, but one that conceals light. It needs to have a definite air of grandeur and solidity, so no wispy lighting features here. CTO's Apollonaire range would be perfect. It has an elegant embassy-look black cotton shade with a fabulous hidden gold interior.

Can you help me find a product that provides natural light in a dark room?

I'm searching for a product I know is available, but whenever I ask at local builders' merchants, they look at me as if I'm talking a different language. The product is a cylindrical tube that has a mirrored internal surface and a clear tile cover to the top and the base. It's used to provide natural light in a dark internal space. would also assume it can be extended to allow for variations in depths between roof and ceiling covers.

The product you're looking for is called a sun pipe. It's basically a very highly polished/mirrored tube with a lens on top that collects light and funnels it down the tube.

Is it safe to adapt Ikea shelving units?

We have an Ikea shelving system in our study that my husband wants to 'adapt' to fit a disparate collection of hi-fi equipment. Is it OK to cut and add to shelving like this, or will we end up with something unsafe and unusable?

Adapting Ikea products is not for the faint-hearted. Because of the materials Ikea uses, you may end up with messy edges and you could lose some of the structure's rigidity. It may be worth getting a joiner to make it up 18mm MDF instead, or check out the range of adapted Billy shelves at Ding3000.

Is it possible to dye or stain laminate flooring to match existing flooring?

My son's south London flat was mainly laid with a laminate floor when he bought it. The long hallways was carpeted, however, so he replaced it wit ha laminate. Unfortunately, it's a much lighter shade than the existing flooring. Is it possible to dye or stain laminate flooring to match and, if so, where could I source such a product?

Not a chance! Laminate is actually a paper photoprint coated with resin and, because of its resistant properties, you'll have no luck tinting it. If you want to change the colour, your only option is to go for a new floor. It's possible to lay a new one on top of the existing floor, but you may then have to re-set the skirting boards and cut the bottom of the doors to the higher floor level. However, as laminate is a poor imitation of wood and you can now get the real thing for a good price, why not replace it entirely? Engineered wood boards are slices of real wood sandwiched with insulation that absorbs noise. They can also be sanded in the future. Kahrs does engineered boards from £16 per sq m. Or visit Wickes, which sell solid pine flooring for less than £15 per sq m.

Where can I get a modern turned wood table without a designer price tag?

I've seen a gorgeous red table that's made by Zanotta with a turned wood stem. It's out of my price range, but I'd love something similar. Any ideas where to look?

The Zanotta table you mean is the Doris by Dominique Mathieu. This season there's turned detail on lots of pieces of designer furniture, so you shouldn't have to look too far to get something close to what you have in mind. For starters, Habitat does the Spin table by Alex Dreyer, £499, which is nice and sleek, but not red unfortunately. If you really want that colour, then another option is to buy an antique piece and paint it in RAL3003, which you can get mixed up in Dulux paint. Now is a very good time to buy, as prices have tumbled. And don't be put off by things that aren't exactly what you are looking for; a lot of antique furniture can easily be updated wit ha splash of colour or new upholstery, so get down to your local auction room.

I need inspiration to help create a Fifties-style diner kitchen.

I'm looking to get some inspiration and help to design a Fifties-style kitchen-diner. I don't have a lot of space, but I'm happy to take on board any ideas.

In the Fifties, Italian cafés in London featured great materials, like strongly patterned Formicas, chrome trims, sharp angles, expressive typefaces and coherent interiors that were expertly detailed..

The glass in my Forties dining-room-divied needs replacing. Where can I get similar glass?

I'm trying to find a special patterned glass for a Forties dining-room divider. The divider is made from teak and has long, vertical panels of glass with bumped stripes , which look like a lens. Unfortunately, one of the three panels is badly damaged and our local glazier has told us we are unlikely to find anything like it. Can you help?

I think you're describing 'reeded' glass. It's not common and you may find that modern versions have thinner reeds than older glass, which tends to be more pronounced. Pearsons Glass has a few designs with reeding up to 8mm wide which costs around £45 per sq m.

Where can I get set of large curtains dyed?

I've inherited a set of large (8ft drop) cotton curtains with swags and cords. The overall size and shape is perfect for where I'm going to use them, but the colour is all wrong. I've searched for someone to dye them to a more usable colour, but no one can do this size of curtain, and I wonder if you know anyone that could help me.

Unfortunately, there are very few options in London (surely a gap in the market here! ), but Chalfont Ltd (020 7935 7316) in Baker Street can help you. Expect a turnaround of about five weeks and be aware that Chalfont only dyes natural fabrics, not synthetics.

I want to change my light switches, but the recesses are too shallow. What should I do?

I live in a Thirties mansion block and recently wanted to replace all the light switches with dimmers. When I removed one of the switches, the recess behind it was too shallow to contain the modern dimmer. Are there shallower switches or will I have to get all the recesses made deeper?

Most standard fittings are relatively thick unless you go for more complex electronic sensor switches, which we wouldn't recommend in your case. Any electrical work needs to be undertaken and certified by a qualified person (this is all to do with the Part P building regulations - find an electrician at niceic.org.uk). And also get the electrician to sort the recesses, too, to be on the safe side.

What's the best method of painting over strong colours?

What's the best method of painting over strong colours? I'm currently redecorating a buy-to-let flat that has garish green and red walls, which are a still showing through after three coats of paint. First paint over the colour with a grey undercoat. This deadens the colour and stops it coming through when you paint your final colour choice. Another factor to consider is that most DIY paints can be a little thin in their consistency, and therefore coverage, so it's worth spending a bit extra to buy professional paint. One of the best white emulsions around is made by JW Bollom.

How can I keep flies out of my house in the summer?

Now summer's finally here and I can open all the windows, I'm getting more and more annoyed by all the flies that get in the house. I don't want to put up nets or to keep windows shut all the time. Any ideas?

As we head for hotter summers, this problem is growing. After suffering the same problem myself, I discovered a brilliant (and cheap, at £1 per m) material - black 'dress net,' the stuff used for tutus and veils. Fixed across windows, it becomes almost invisible, but still allows a breeze through, so your home can look modern and have the windows open all night. Modern Furniture Makes For An Incredibly Inviting Living Room

Modern furniture, with its practicality and basic elegance, makes for an incredibly inviting living room space. The roots of the movement are found in the post WWII era. Designers and consumers were beginning to have a fresh and positive outlook about the future. The inviting style of the furniture that was designed and produced reflects the sentiment of the day. Consumer's modern desires, coupled with more disposable income, began a trend in furniture that continues to the present day. The style continues to be reinvented as new designers come onto the scene with new ideas stemming from the works of their predecessors.

Contemporary decor is sophisticated and sleek. The furniture is functional and comfortable. Oversized proportions and relaxed elegance are trademarks of this modern style. Instead of the worth of a piece of living room furniture lying in how many hours it took to complete the piece, modern home decor is judged on its capability to balance aesthetically pleasing design with practicality. Modern-styled furniture is a diverse topic, but all furniture created in this style holds the basic tenants of simplicity and functionality in common.

Perhaps the most famous and long-standing example of this modern style is the Tulip Chair. The chair, designed by Eero Saarinen, in 1957, was a simple single leg chair created from fiberglass reinforced resin. It came in an as-sundry of base colors and customizable cushions to fit any contemporary home decor scheme. The chair won the Museum of Modern Art's most prestigious award in 1969 followed by several other design awards. The simple design has proved to be before its time. The Tulip Chair is still one of the most popular pieces sold in furniture shops around the world. Customers love the unpretentious design coupled with its charming versatile appeal. Contemporary decor seems to grow based on the design ideas that the Tulip Chair introduced to the design community.

Japan is known for its hospitality. The "less-is-more" design movement can trace its way back to influences from Japanese design. The beautiful, simple designs were easy to mix and match and appealed to the emergence of the desire for "sets" in the western world. Consumers were seemingly obsessed with matching bedroom sets, living room sets, and dining room sets. Japanese styled design could make this concept a reality for many people wanting to create inviting living space within their personal homes. Outdoor furniture became popular, as well, as the backyard was starting to be seen as an extension of one's living room. The design aesthetic grew to include things like bird feeders, outdoor furniture, plastic wall clocks, and electric fondue pots.

Living rooms have become less stuffy and more relaxed. This is the key to creating an inviting space enveloped in modern design ideals. The newer furniture is less ornate, lighter in weight, and boasts a mindfulness that is alluring to guests. The materials used changes to include new technology in manufacturing. Tubular metal was an innovation at the beginning of the modern movement. Dalmine began manufacturing seamless steel tubes at low prices, and the material took off as a modern building marvel. Molded plywood was introduced onto the scene around this time as well. Flowing organic style contributes to the less stuffy attitude of modern consumers. These styles are useful, durable, and unique.

Consumers, in addition to other factors, desire portable design. The large, clunky, and overly ornate design of older furniture does not lend itself well to a jet setter population. Families who move around often desire the simplicity and portable nature of modern decor. It is easier to collect pieces of furniture and other accessories that make a space personal and interesting if the furniture is lighter and maintains a high level of functionality.

A movement that has grown out of the modern design movement is the eco-design variant. Containing the tenants of modern decor design and combining them with the use of sustainable materials is a new concept in contemporary home decor. Some up and coming modern furniture designers that boast this style include Alexander Julian, Thom Filicia, and Alessandro Mendini. Eco-design is comfortable and sits well with the consumer who is eco-conscious. The new designs are innovative and exciting. Modern home decor is expected to change along the lines of these new designer's visions. Creating an inviting living room and whole estate is easy and practical if consumers keep these modern design innovations in mind.

Georgie has always found modern furniture to be his favorite. He thought that contemporary living room furnishings suited his room and mind the best, so he went ahead and completely redid the living room.

3 Dream Bedrooms Ideas

A bedroom can be so much more than a place to sleep. It can also be a retreat, filled with serenity, peace and romance. By its very nature, a bedroom should be a place of relaxation. After all, that's what it's designed to do.

Creating a dream bedroom isn't as hard as it seems. All it takes is a little imagination, some basic design sense and a little know-how during your trips to the do-it-yourself and bed and bath stores.

Here are three great looks that you can create in your own dream bedroom:

1. A French Elegance Dream Bedroom

When it comes to a romantic retreat, few would argue that the French are masters at creating one. Their exquisite sense of luxury and comfort fills the room with divine fabrics, a breathtaking palette of colors and superior craftsmanship.

To create the perfect French Elegance bedroom, you want to invest in the best linens your budget can afford. You want to be able to sink into a world of comfortable luxury and linens with highest thread counts possible can really do the trick.

The use of luxurious fabrics extends to the windows as well. Try some sheers if you don't want the room to be too dark. Finally, a tapestry or two will look grand on the walls and create the French Elegance you're after. Nothing's more French than tapestries.

2. A Japanese Zen Bedroom

For many of us, the thought of a tranquil dream bedroom begins in the Far East. To create your own Zen-like environment, you want to choose neutral colors, such as green or tan with touches of gray for the walls and bedding. You can't really go wrong if you choose colors found in nature.

Building upon a natural theme, you also want to add plants, water features and candles to the room. The goal again is to create a place of peace and serenity. If you enjoy meditations, you may want to add a mat to the room so you can meditate in the morning before the sun rises and you start your day.

Since a Zen inspired bedroom can look a bit drab, you'll want to add some decor to the walls to enhance the visual interest. Because they are made of natural fibers and organic in design, you may want to consider Oriental influenced tapestries for the walls.

3. The Modern Bedroom

A modern bedroom is a timeless choice. The sleek design follows the important mantra of modernism: "Form follows function." As a result, you'll find that all modern furniture emphasizes comfort over style, since comfort is the most important function of furnishings. When creating your modern bedroom, remember that you can mix and match furnishings within the larger modern furniture family. Be sure to pay attention to the lighting as well. It should be modern as well. For wall treatments, you may want to opt for modern art tapestries that bring energy, color and vibrancy to the room.

Of course, these are just three of the many dream bedrooms that you can create. The most important thing is to follow your own dreams and go with something you like. After all, dreams are meant to come true.

Looking for elegant decor for your home or bedroom? You can use a tapestry wall art that will enchant you. Tom Matherson writes for Worldwide Tapestries where you'll find a wide range of wall tapestries including French tapestries wall hangings and large tapestry wall hangings to transform any home.

2. Dressing the Bed

The bed should be elaborately dressed with canopies and drapes, lots of pillows, flounces, ribbons and other trims. If you can search out your local fabric store and see if they have period type quilts etc., available.

3. Tables

It is important that you include either a marble topped table or cabinet in your room design as well as a wicker, bamboo or faux bamboo table, round or skirted table as a nightstand. Why not visit your local junk or antique shop to see what turned and carved wooden tables they may have for inclusion in your design from that era.

4. Lighting

It is vital that you get the lighting right in decorating a Victorian bedroom and this should include the classic ginger-jar style, or those that are made from porcelain, crystal or brass. You may even decide to use candlestick holders which have been transformed to be used as a light. Under each lamp you should place a crocheted doily for obtaining the authentic period look.

5. Dressers & Chest of Drawers

These should be typically made from either dark stained oak, mahogany or walnut and be embellished with carvings, pediments and have either ornate brass or carved wooden drawer pulls. You may be lucky to find ones that also have a candle stand, tilting mirror and marble top to them.

Interior Design Ideas: Windows Style Benefits

There are many different interior design ideas for windows and most of them seem like they are purely for decorative purposes, but there are many benefits that window treatments and styles can offer for your home as well.

Style

When it comes to interior design ideas, windows are one of the main pieces that can have a variety of different treatment styles which enhance the look and feel of any room. They can make or break the room decor and create a space that people love to spend in or absolutely don't.

It's possible to keep one room with the same decor and just change the window styles. The magic of window treatments is they can change a room in an instant. They can add light, remove it, add texture or stay subdued in the background. The choices are endless since they are such versatile yet stationary pieces in a room.

Theme

With the different types of interior design ideas, windows can create or tie in a theme to any room of a home. Regardless of the size and shape of the window, there are different treatment ideas that can mask or show off the windows in a positive way.

Whether you're looking for simple or extravagant, there are sure to be window treatment pieces available that will perfectly match the decor you have in mind.

Light

Protect plants, furniture or precious images like paintings or photographs from harsh sunlight. Layers help you control the amount of light that enters the room. Choose to combine sheers closer to the window with heavy solids in the room to control light. Open the solid curtains to allow light in or keep them shut to block everything out.

Noise

When it comes to noise control with interior design ideas, windows don't normally come to mind. By sealing windows and adding different treatments, it's possible to control some of the noise that can be heard from inside and outside of the room.

Choose heavy fabrics for curtains, blinds made of a thicker absorbing material or combine the two options for more quiet. These materials allow little sound to pass through, which is ideal for bedrooms and lounges since they require more peace.

Privacy

Just as the noise level can be controlled, the privacy factor can certainly be controlled. Most opt for sheer or lacy curtains since they offer some amount of privacy without blocking a lot of the light or view from outdoors.

For total privacy, there are many different blinds, shades and longer solid curtains that can be used. If total privacy is required without blocking 100% of the light, there are many wonderful weaved blinds and curtains that are available.

Energy Efficiency

For modern interior design ideas, windows are among the top areas to consider for energy efficiency. To warm up a room naturally, it's good to have window treatments that allow a lot of natural sunlight in. blinds and sheer curtains are generally the top choices since they also provide sufficient privacy. To lock in heat in the evening or during the colder months of the year, heavy fabric curtains are the window treatment of choice since it allows very minimal amounts of heat to escape and blocks any little drafts from the windows themselves.
